Sylvia Pankhurst review À 0 Lovers with an Italian revolutionary and bore his son when she was 45 She fought for Ethiopian independence and was given a state funeral after her death in 1960 in recognition of her importance to the Ethiopian cause Fifty four years later a member of the House of Lords is campaigning for a statue of Sylvia Pankhurst to be erected opposite the Houses of Parliament a long deserved recognition of the importance of this rebellious Suffragette Update of Shirley Harrison’s definitive study of the famous Suffragette first published in 2004 bu. My ignorance was such that I simply associated Sylvia Pankhurst with her mother Emmeline and her sister Christabel and their fight for women s suffrage And not much else But as this compelling and comprehensive biography reveals there was a lot to Sylvia than the battle for votes In fact that fight only took up about 10 years of her long life during which she devoted her tireless efforts to a variety of other worthy causes She was to some extent overshadowed by her mother and sister due to their violent tactics which she herself didn t approve of Once she broke away from them she worked ceaselessly for the oppressed disadvantaged and under privileged with seemingly inexhaustible energy and espoused a number of causes It turned out to be an extraordinary life moving from the East End of London to Ethiopia where she spent her last years and where she was so well thought of that she remains the only foreigner to ever have a state funeral Her relationships were many and varied from Keir Hardie with whom she had a long lasting romance to the Italian Silvio Corio by whom she had a much loved son Richard from George Bernard Shaw to Bertrand Russell Lenin to Jomo Kenyatta And many others Well researched well written and accessible the biography not only describes the life but the social and political milieu and events that Sylvia lived through and I learnt a great deal from my reading Highly recommended
